Unveiling Akyaka: A Coastal Treasure in Turkey
My fondest memory of Akyaka? It was during our second evening on our recent visit: the beach bathed in the soft hues of a stunning sunset, with mountains encircling the town shifting into deep purples. The atmosphere was captivating: sun loungers neatly stacked, waitstaff bustling about with menus and small lamps. Further along at one of the beach bars, a trio of Turkish women sat comfortably in the sand, their hair reminiscent of pepper and smoke as they focused on their knitting. I reminisced about othre beaches across Turkey where socialites and influencers showcase their extravagant lifestyles; this serene location felt like my perfect getaway.
A fond Connection to Akyaka
Akyaka—a charming village located at the eastern edge of Gökova Bay—has been a critically important place for me as my days as a holiday representative three decades ago. Back then, I would frequently visit to check on clients staying at quaint pansiyons (small guesthouses). Surprisingly, much has remained unchanged here compared to many other Turkish towns that have seen ample transformations since the mid-1990s.
The timeless Allure of Akyaka
Akyaka has certainly progressed over time—new hotels and residences have emerged, its beach has expanded considerably, and it has become a notable kitesurfing destination (more details on that later). Yet it maintains an authentic charm characterized by its relaxed pace and slightly rustic feel.
This authenticity is partly due to its recognition as one of Turkey’s “slow towns”, which focuses on preserving local culture while improving quality of life without falling prey to excessive tourist commercialization. The influence of Turkish poet and architect Nail Çakirhan still resonates here; after moving here in 1971, he built a home that blended conventional Ottoman architecture with local materials. His vision inspired others who revitalized local crafts such as carpentry; by the 1990s his architectural standards became prevalent for new constructions throughout Akyaka. As a result, you’ll find streets lined with elegant homes featuring intricately carved wooden balconies adorned with bougainvillea—modern glass buildings are notably absent.
An enchanting Return Visit
I returned for an extended stay in 2022 alongside my husband Mark—and once again fell under its spell! The absence of large all-inclusive resorts means most visitors are locals drawn here for fresh seafood restaurants lining Azmak River or hiking trails through lush forests rising from one end of the beach or simply enjoying leisurely days knitting along sandy shores.
Since then we’ve consistently chosen İskelem Otel , located just beyond pine forests minutes away from town center—a collection comprising three charming hotels set around a small bay leading into Gökova Gulf itself! Initially uncertain about our choice due lackluster amenities like sun loungers on wooden jetties rather than actual beaches—but any doubts vanished upon receiving warm greetings (“English? You’re… English?”) from Müjgan—the delightful receptionist—and savoring breathtaking views right outside our room paired perfectly well ice-cold Efes beer served promptly! At nightfall similar transformations occur where sunbeds give way linen-clad tables flickering candlelight creating magical dining experiences surrounded by sea breezes!

Culinary Experiences That Delight
The culinary adventures we’ve had were nothing short but extraordinary: grilled sea bream seasoned perfectly with tangy lemon & salt; succulent Adana kebabs made from tender lamb meat paired alongside creamy yogurt infused garlic flavors; silky aubergine dishes complemented rich sauces followed up decadent baklava leaving us buzzing sugar high bedtime! Mornings bring forth feasts featuring crispy börek (savory pastry rolls) stuffed feta cheese accompanied fresh tomatoes parsley drizzled honey jams omelets sizzling hot off pan—I convince myself vigorous hour paddleboarding will balance indulgences while Mark dives headfirst into breakfast!
Kite Surf Paradise Awaits!
For Mark though all beauty pales against fact this region ranks among Med’s premier watersport havens thanks thermic winds blowing across gulf May-November rising late morning daily clockwork usually between 15–18 knots (key factors apparently)!
