Creating Lasting Memories: A Unique Bonding Experience with My Son
How can one truly connect with a teenage boy? After my son, Hugo, completed his A-levels, I felt compelled to embark on a memorable adventure together before he ventured out into the world. The goal was to create lasting memories that we could cherish.
This task proved more challenging than anticipated: as a midlife woman and a teenage boy, our interests seemed worlds apart. I preferred walking while he favored being driven. My inclination was to rise early; he preferred sleeping in. I sought out exotic cuisine; he craved classic pub fare. While I wanted to engage in meaningful conversations,he often opted for silence (especially when it came to lengthy discussions with me). finding the perfect destination felt like an overwhelming challenge.
A Shared Passion for Creativity
However, there was one common interest that sparked excitement in both of us: crafting and building things together. Could this be the key to our bonding experience? When I proposed attending a three-day stone-carving workshop on the south Downs followed by a wood-turning class nestled deep within an East Sussex forest, Hugo surprisingly agreed.
This plan allowed us to spend quality time without feeling pressured to converse constantly. We could start our days at a compromise between our preferred wake-up times and enjoy meals at pubs that catered to both of our tastes. plus, we would stay at my mother’s home in Lewes (though there are plenty of local accommodations available including a youth hostel set in an old Sussex farmhouse offering various lodging options). Not only would we create memories together but also leave with tangible creations—perhaps wooden bowls reminiscent of Conran designs or stone sculptures inspired by Hepworth’s work.
The Journey Begins
Nervously yet excitedly, we arrived at the Skelton Workshop, just after Hugo finished his last A-level exam. Tucked away within the South Downs near Hassocks lies this stone-carving studio close to where renowned sculptor John Skelton once worked (students can explore Skelton’s sculpture garden during their courses). The expansive barn-like workshop overlooks sloping vineyards which unexpectedly included an inviting wine bar and restaurant nearby—the Artelium wine estate. With its award-winning wines and delightful outdoor terrace serving charcuterie boards alongside homemade bread, it became our go-to lunch spot for three consecutive days.
Diving into Stone-Carving
The first decision awaited us: should we carve letters or sculptures? We both chose sculpture! Next came selecting our stones—Hugo picked striking green granite while I opted for Italian soapstone’s smooth texture. Unprepared as usual without any pre-planned ideas, we found inspiration through books provided by course instructors and discussions with fellow students; ultimately deciding on abstract designs for our pieces.
After three days filled with chiseling under open skies—hammering away at stone blocks—we produced sculptures worthy enough for display during an end-of-course exhibition! To our astonishment, many attendees praised our work during this “private viewing.” We celebrated afterward at The Gun, located in Chiddingly—a gastropub known for its tasty stone-baked pizzas along with unique offerings like their “gut-loving burrito bowl” packed full of ingredients that delighted me but were less appealing according to Hugo!
A New Craft Awaits: Wood-Turning Adventure
The following day took us 30 minutes eastward towards privately owned woods near Battle where we aimed high—to master wood-turning using traditional pole lathes steeped in heritage craft techniques! Our instructor Amy Leake—a petite yet impressively strong green woodworker—set up shop beneath sprawling oak trees providing shade from sunlight filtering through leaves above us as she introduced each lathe she crafted herself using simple materials such as sawn branches combined creatively into functional tools!
Amy guided us expertly through transforming hefty chunks of timber into lovely bowls while sweat dripped down brows amidst flying wood shavings swirling around like confetti celebrating progress made throughout this labor-intensive process! By day’s end tired yet proud owners emerged holding two stunning bowls crafted entirely by ourselves!
Culminating Our Adventure With Fun Activities

To unwind after all those creative endeavors—we treated ourselves back towards hastings indulging freshly caught fish & chips right along sandy shores followed by some light-hearted crazy golf games against each other amidst laughter echoing across seaside attractions before returning home again ready finally restfully sleep soundly afterwards!

I find myself gazing fondly upon these proudly displayed sculptures & bowls now sitting comfortably around my living space—they never fail bring smiles whenever they catch sight because they symbolize not just artistic achievements but rather deeper connections forged between Hugo & myself throughout shared experiences filled laughter sweat joy alike!
