The Arctic cathedral: A Contemporary Architectural Wonder in Norway
Situated in Tromsø, the Tromsøysund parish church, commonly referred to as the Arctic Cathedral, exemplifies modernist design. Its elegant and streamlined facade seamlessly integrates with the surrounding natural beauty while drawing influence from traditional sami architecture. Upon entering, guests are welcomed by some of the most pleasant pews imaginable. The stunning glass mosaic known as “The Return of Christ” at one end may not appeal to everyone, but for me, it radiates a sense of majesty and importance. Leaving this remarkable structure after an organ concert only to witness the northern lights shimmering above was truly enchanting.

Matisse’s Final Resting Place: Picturesque Views Above Nice

E Fesenko/alamy
I have frequently enough wondered what attracts individuals to churches until I visited Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez. The gardens filled with vibrant flowers and aromatic herbs offer a stunning view over Nice, where Matisse’s grave is located within its cemetery; however, it is truly the intimate chapel that embodies what a church should represent—humble yet profound in its capacity to absorb faith through centuries without ostentation or excess.
Sitting there enveloped by serenity was indescribable; it felt like tranquility intertwined with something deeper that finally illuminated my understanding of why churches hold such significance for many.
