Exploring the Enchanting waters of Stockholm’s Archipelago
Paddling through the deep azure waters of Stockholm’s outer archipelago, I am surrounded by a tapestry of islands and soaring birds. Some landmasses are tiny skerries—rocky formations so diminutive they can barely accommodate a single cormorant drying its wings—while others, like our destination Bullerön, stretch over a mile long, adorned with historic fishing cabins, summer homes, and wooden docks nestled among thier weathered stones and wind-swept woodlands.
A New Marine Sanctuary: Nämdöskärgården
I am embarking on a two-day sea kayaking adventure in Nämdöskärgården, Sweden’s newly designated marine national park. Spanning an remarkable 25,000 hectares (approximately 62,000 acres), this protected area is predominantly aquatic—97% water—and extends from the outer archipelago into the expansive Baltic Sea.
This marks Sweden’s second marine national park after Kosterhavet on the west coast. The Swedish parliament approved its establishment in June this year during a summer that also saw the country outlaw bottom trawling—a destructive fishing method likened by Sir david Attenborough to “bulldozing a rainforest”. By July 2026, this ban will extend to all marine national parks and nature reserves across Sweden. This makes it the first European nation to implement such measures; meanwhile, efforts in other countries like the UK have faced setbacks as conservationists express disappointment over rejected proposals for complete bans in more protected areas.
The importance of Ocean Conservation Awareness
One important hurdle in fostering concern for ocean conservation is that many people struggle to connect with what lies beneath the surface or beyond their immediate experience. The vision behind Nämdöskärgården is not only to safeguard its unique ecological richness but also to provide visitors with low-impact access to these pristine waters. Sea kayaking—a beloved activity among Swedes throughout these islands—is an ideal means for achieving this goal.
Stockholm Adventures and I are dropped off at jungfruskär via taxi boat—a location devoid of human habitation like many other islands here. We carefully haul our slender yellow kayaks onto rocks adorned with vibrant lichen hues ranging from gray and green to radiant orange. After receiving essential safety instructions from Johan regarding our route towards Idöborg—an island just outside the marine park where we’ll spend our night—I learn we’ll be covering approximately five miles; he reassures me that favorable winds will assist us along certain stretches while we take breaks en route.
The initial paddling against headwinds proves challenging for about fifty meters before we find ourselves sheltered between two elongated islands. Gradually settling into an easy rhythm allows us time to appreciate nature’s beauty surrounding us—the air filled with various bird species including cormorants, gulls, herons, and geese; during our trip we even spot five different white-tailed eagles alongside sightings of pine martens and seals! However excitingly enough is witnessing diverse seaweed varieties displaying colors reminiscent of autumn leaves—a clear indicator that these waters are thriving ecosystems providing nurseries for young fish while acting as vital carbon sinks absorbing atmospheric carbon efficiently.

Paddling Through Pristine Ecosystems
Paddling across stunning seagrass meadows glistening under sunlight filtering through clouds reveals extensive patches filled with bladder wrack (known locally as blåstång), dark green seaweed buoyed by air pockets below surface level; thanks largely due clarity allowing visibility into habitats teeming with periwinkles alongside various shellfish species!
The absence of other boats or kayaks can be attributed partly due inclement weather conditions typical september days—but also because navigating narrow channels between islands becomes feasible solely via kayak rather than larger vessels which cannot traverse such tight spaces easily! At times we glide through towering reed fields where paths narrow down resembling footpaths instead!
A Culinary Break Amidst Nature’s Splendor
We pause lunch at another uninhabited isle indulging ourselves upon flavorful fish stew prepared earlier by Johan himself! Being mindful about leaving no trace behind within an environment untouched thus far—we meticulously inspect area ensuring no litter remains before continuing onward journey ahead! p >

The beauty surrounding each island captivates me yet they appear similar making navigation seem daunting until realizing Johan relies primarily upon intuition rather than technology—with GPS only utilized once checking final crossing toward Idoborg amid rising winds! Upon arrival at sheltered sandy bay stashing kayaks away safely leads us checking into cozy forest cabins boasting panoramic views overlooking increasingly turbulent seas ahead! While wild camping options exist when weather permits tonight feels reassuring having solid roof overhead!
Idoborg offers private accommodations nestled amongst dense woods featuring multiple cabin choices plus delightful restaurant serving seasonal local cuisine—the Jerusalem artichoke soup paired perfectly alongside seagrass pesto stands out remarkably well too! Additionally there exists sauna facing tranquil waters inviting guests dip between waves heat.
As dusk settles around us enjoying sauna experience brings warmth despite still active ocean currents however next morning reveals calmer conditions awaiting gentle paddle journey spanning two-and-half miles leading directly toward main isle known simply as Bullerön situated right before open seas commence!
