Honoring the Legacy of Bill Blatch: A Devoted Champion of Bordeaux Wines
bill Blatch,a prominent figure in the wine community, sadly passed away at 76 following a heart attack. For over forty years, he dedicated his life to the world of Bordeaux wines, distributing them internationally and significantly contributing to the esteemed Southwold annual tastings for UK wine professionals in collaboration with Farr Vintners based in London.
A Distinctive Outlook on Wine
Affectionately dubbed “the Bordeaux wine whisperer,” Bill possessed an unyielding enthusiasm for Sauternes. He acted as a vital bridge between celebrated Bordeaux wineries and their passionate advocates across both UK and US markets. With his approachable nature, he often transported fine vintages in plastic cola bottles—one notable occasion featured a 1964 Moët that he presented during a Masters of Wine meeting. His adventurous spirit was evident during road trips across America where he ardently promoted lesser-known vineyards or petits châteaux.
A Rich Background and Early Learning
Born in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, Bill was raised by Pamela (née Beachcroft), who served as a Wren during World War II, and John Blatch, who later took on the role of company secretary at Mac Fisheries. He attended Bradfield College in Berkshire before embarking on teaching experiences abroad in France.
The Path into Winemaking
Bill’s journey into the wine industry began early; he initially worked with Stowells wine merchants before enrolling at Magdalen College,Oxford to study modern languages starting in 1967. Generosity defined his character; while at university, he developed a friendship with his college cellar master who quickly recognized Bill’s exceptional palate.
A Life Rooted in Love for France
The allure of France captivated him profoundly; after marrying Tita Marsan—a French national—in 1973, they established their home in Bordeaux where Bill became an influential member of the local wine scene. He achieved his Master of Wine designation and collaborated with various merchants before founding Vintex—a venture launched by him—in 1982.
An Evolving Chapter: Digital Ventures and Accolades
Following the sale of Vintex in 2006, bill embraced e-commerce through Bordeaux gold—an online platform dedicated to Barsac and Sauternes wines. This initiative cemented his legacy within this specialized market; renowned for his extensive expertise regarding Sauternes wines led to him being honored as Chevalier de L’Ordre Nationale du Mérite for contributions to winemaking excellence back in 2014.
Pursuits Beyond Winemaking Expertise
In addition to winemaking knowledge, fishing and scuba diving were two other passions that enriched Bill’s life experience. Each year brought new adventures into Canada’s wilderness where he’d camp amidst nature’s rugged beauty while fishing or living off what could be gathered from the land—once even navigating rapids unexpectedly on Hudson bay! His diverse circle of friends cherished their time together; one friend fondly recalled how delightful it was to be around him due to his vast array of stories and insights.
A Final Swim Among Friends
Bill’s life came full circle doing what brought him joy—snorkeling among fish off Tahiti’s shores—a fitting conclusion for someone so deeply connected with nature’s wonders.
He is survived by Tita along with family members including nephew Adam and myself.
