Cheshire’s Alternative to the Alps
Why travel all the way to the Swiss Alps when you can explore Macclesfield Forest right in your backyard? A trek from Trentabank car park leads you to the 506-meter summit of Shutlingsloe, affectionately known as Cheshire’s mini Matterhorn. The breathtaking vistas from its peak are a year-round delight, but on crisp winter days, they reach their zenith: witness stunning views of the Staffordshire Roaches, Manchester’s skyline, and even Jodrell Bank, extending all the way to Llandudno’s Great Orme. After your hike, return to Trentabank where a food truck awaits with local delicacies like Staffordshire oatcakes.

Discover Norfolk’s Coastal Wonders
The expansive Holkham beach. Photograph: Nature Picture Library/Alamy
No matter how crowded it may seem upon arrival at Holkham Nature Reserve, its vast beaches, marshlands, and extensive pine forests quickly disperse visitors. While southerly winds can bring mild winter days, those blowing off the North Sea can be quite fierce. The lighting here is extraordinary and offers numerous walking paths enhanced by a boardwalk and visitor center for an enriched experience. This north-facing coastline attracts weary migratory birds seeking refuge while pinewoods provide shelter against harsh conditions. Bird hides along the southern edge overlook marshes—ideal for observing winter wildfowl and raptors.

A Dominican college overlooks Portstewart Strand.
The trail known as Portstewart Cliff Walk is frequently enough referred to as Nuns’ walk due to its path around Dominican College’s perimeter. Starting with views over Portstewart Strand , this walk concludes in town center amidst Atlantic breezes that invigorate your senses after indulgent moments or hard workdays. Timing your visit for sunset will reward you with impressive views; afterward enjoy a cozy pint by a fire at THE ANCHOR BAR .

The Ideal Winter Hike in Chilterns
Snowfall on Chilterns’ northern slopes.
If frosty weather prevails , this hike is unbeatable . Departing from Ewelme village (home of famous watercress beds), ascend eastward through fields and beech woods towards Ewelme park , veering left past Swyncombe House which boasts stunning vistas over Oxford Vale while keeping northward near church grounds before crossing main roads into classic Chiltern woodland filled with deer , pheasants , dappled sunlight before gently descending through ancient earthworks back down into ewelme just as dusk settles . It spans five miles taking about two-and-a-half hours without any pubs along route—but trust me; nature makes up for it!
