Discovering the Enchantment of the Isles of Scilly: A Nature-Filled Adventure

As I stand in line at Penzance South Pier, waiting for the Scillonian ferry, I find myself amidst a throng of eager travelers. The atmosphere is electric with excitement as returning visitors, sun-kissed and full of joy, stroll past. Exclamations like “You’re back!” and “Until next year!” resonate around me,highlighting a tight-knit community of repeat guests—many accompanied by their beloved pets.

This journey carries a tinge of sadness for me; my daughter Maddy and I are missing our dog Wilf, who sadly passed away just before our trip. I’m hopeful that an adventure filled with wildlife watching on the Isles of Scilly will help us navigate through this loss.

A fellow passenger disembarking with a cockapoo and binoculars shares an exhilarating piece of news: “We saw a fin whale!” he exclaims to another traveler in line. This revelation heightens my anticipation; after all, the Scillonian ferry is famous for its potential sightings of marine life on clear days like today when visibility is superb.

From the deck, Land’s End looks more breathtaking than ever against the tranquil sea backdrop. Several seasoned wildlife watchers equipped with telescopes scan the horizon eagerly—but despite their vigilance, no dolphins or other marine creatures make an appearance today; not even humpbacks or basking sharks that typically grace these waters during summer months.

The magic Unfolds: First Impressions Upon Arrival at Scilly

The voyage across water to reach Scilly proves rewarding as we near wild headlands adorned with rugged cliffs and pristine white beaches framed by stunning turquoise waters interspersed with golden strands from kelp beds. While misty weather can often cloak these islands in gloominess, today they radiate under bright sunny skies reminiscent of tropical getaways.

Hugh Town—the capital located on St Mary’s—is nestled between two rocky outcrops along a narrow land bridge. It boasts an eclectic charm reminiscent of simpler times when traffic was scarce—a refreshing contrast to bustling city life.

A scenic Perspective from Star Castle Hotel

From our perch at Star Castle Hotel, we take in views across all surrounding islands while conversing with a friendly local who has brought her labrador along for companionship. She succinctly describes each island’s unique character: St Martin’s offers beach vibes; Tresco attracts royal visitors; St Agnes thrives on artistic expression; Bryher remains wild and untouched.

St Agnes showcases ‘the kind of traffic levels our grandparents would recognise’.

Paddling towards new Adventures on Bryher island

Bryher becomes our main destination for wildlife exploration as we plan to rent kayaks there to paddle towards Samson Island—a protected area rich in biodiversity where I hope we’ll encounter some engaging creatures now that whales have eluded us thus far.
Before setting off though, we decide first to explore St Agnes alongside Vickie from “Isles Of Scilly Wildlife Trust.”.

An Insightful Guided Tour Through Nature’s Treasures

A short ferry ride takes us over to St Agnes where Vickie leads us across sandy spits connecting it with Gugh while sharing insights about local ecology—like how rats once posed threats to seabird populations here but have as been eradicated leading many species back into recovery mode!
