Discovering the Great Outdoors: A Family Expedition
“look, aliens!” My son’s excited voice rang out through the forest as I searched for him among the trees. For a fleeting moment, we were enveloped in silence, with sunlight streaming down onto a patch of ferns nearby, reminiscent of scenes from The X-Files.
then came a rustling sound ahead. “Quick! I found them!” he shouted before sprinting into an open area between the pines.Following closely behind, we stumbled upon an eye-catching metal sculpture that looked like a UFO—its dark exterior blending seamlessly with the shadows. My son was already climbing on top of it.
Before I could capture a good photo, he was off again. “We have to find number four now,” he urged.
Adventuring in Rendlesham Forest
This escapade unfolded in Suffolk’s Rendlesham Forest, located just 15 miles from Ipswich. We were exploring a complimentary UFO trail inspired by sightings reported by U.S. military personnel back in 1980. My son enjoys following trails where he can check off numbers—especially when they lead to something exciting at the end (in this case, a playground). He eagerly walked and skipped along our three-mile journey while I cherished our time spent outdoors together.
Navigating Summer Break Challenges
The summer break—a span of six weeks within 13 total school-free weeks—often feels like an endless countdown until school resumes. This lengthy hiatus can be tough as parents juggle childcare with work obligations and seek ways to keep children entertained without resorting to screens—all while managing expenses as many activities can be costly. Thankfully, there’s always nature!
Fun Outdoor Activities
The UFO-themed walk was featured on Forestry England, one of my favorite destinations during holidays. From interactive app-based trails where kids can create videos pretending to be dragons with AI wings to crafting missions that involve collecting natural items from the forest floor for creative projects like making Gruffalo faces—these activities offer budget-pleasant ways for families to connect with nature.
A free leaflet provided at the start of our UFO trail guided us through meaningful sites where I shared stories about each location’s history and importance. My son became so engrossed in both the map and narrative that he asked me to read it again over breakfast; tracing his finger along our path as he reminisced about our adventure filled me with joy.

A Day Out at Thorpeness and Aldeburgh Beach
An outdoor adventure doesn’t always require deep woods or maps; sometimes all you need is curiosity! The following day we headed over to Thorpeness—a delightful village famous for its iconic House in the Clouds, originally constructed as a water tower disguised as an eye-catching house back in 1923. Our mission was straightforward: capture an unusual photograph of this unique structure while wandering footpaths lined with charming weatherboard homes dating back after World War I.
While my attention was drawn towards this architectural wonder, my son’s excitement peaked when he spotted an old windmill across from it—the very one purchased by its creator for water pumping!
Aldeburgh lies adjacent to Thorpeness; there we spent hours playing on its shingle beach—collecting “magic stones,” splashing around in waves from the North Sea while seeking shelter under Maggi Hambling’s giant scallop shell during unexpected rain showers. We concluded our day indulging in tasty fish and chips from Aldeburgh Fish & Chips—a family-run establishment sence 1967—and even weeks later my son still fondly recalls this outing as one of his best experiences ever!
The Magic of Beaches for Kids
beaches are fantastic venues when trying instill appreciation for nature among children! On another occasion at New Quay located within Ceredigion (the inspiration behind Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood), we spent an entire day outdoors without stepping inside once! setting up camp beneath large umbrellas during low tide allowed us ample prospect not only bury each other but also search shorelines for jellyfish (perfect teaching moments) alongside rock pooling adventures where crabs scuttled away amidst limpets clinging tightly onto rocks—all culminating into building elaborate sandcastles fortified against incoming tides!

Treasured Memories Through Travel Adventures
I often try incorporating train journeys into trips because they feel more adventurous! A couple summers ago saw us taking high-speed trains northward toward Scotland before boarding ferries bound for Isle Mull—as foot passengers no less! Once there renting e-bikes equipped with child seats opened up exploration opportunities including wild camping beside picturesque lochs where together we pitched tents under starlit skies sharing marshmallows over dinner cooked atop portable stoves whilst bonding deeply throughout these moments together!
