Embracing the Summer Solstice: A Celebration of lithuania’s Joninės
As dusk falls, a lively bonfire ignites, and our circle of friends takes turns leaping over the flickering flames. This time-honored tradition is thought to bring blessings such as increased vitality, prosperity, and fertility.
The heat from the fire is perfectly balanced by a sauna we built using an excessive five sacks of logs—something we later agreed was perhaps too aspiring. When the warmth became intense, we sought refuge in the cool waters of a nearby pond, repeating this refreshing cycle several times.

The Magic of Joninės
Reflecting on those long summer evenings brings back vivid memories of my captivating experience in Lithuania during Joninės—the celebration of the summer solstice. This festival takes place every year on June 23rd and 24th and is also referred to as Saint John’s festival in honor of John the Baptist. Though, its origins are deeply rooted in ancient pagan customs that predate Christianity.

Similar festivities are celebrated throughout Estonia and Latvia under names like Jaanipäev and Jāņi respectively. These events draw individuals from cities into nature for feasting, singing, drinking, and honoring age-old traditions associated with fertility and renewal.
I traveled by train from Tallinn to Riga before heading to Kaunas—Lithuania’s second-largest city—to meet up with my girlfriend Jūratė. From there it was just 50 miles eastward to her family gathering near Čiobiškis—a vibrant assembly consisting of around 80 relatives spanning generations from infants to octogenarians; Julė being our esteemed matriarch overseeing our celebrations.
A Rustic Journey Begins
The journey included taking a charming ferry across the Neris River—a peaceful start that set an idyllic tone for our adventure ahead. After crossing over, we drove thru lush forests leading us into what felt like an intimate family festival where relatives had traveled from all corners of Lithuania bringing abundant food for our two-day celebration.
